Hi Parents!

For homework this week, students will be writing their own story.  The title is called The Day the Leprechaun Came to School.  Please help your child as they write and illustrate their leprechaun story.  These are due Friday.  Please have the books completed and returned this Friday, 3/15.  If they are complete, students will be able to sit in the author’s chair and read their story to the class.  I’m excited to hear them!

I was out on Friday, and I received a not great note from the substitute.  In addition, today I have been noticing MANY students talking over me, talking out, not following directions, etc.  Please ask your child if he/she had to sit out at recess today for receiving a bad note from the substitute.  I understand that the kiddos are ready for Spring Break, but I expect better from them.  Please have a talk with your child to discuss expected behaviors at school.  Of course, I know this is not everyone!  Praise your child if he/she always does his/her best at school!

Below is a preview of some of the things we’ll be doing this week:

Phonics:

We will be discussing blends this week.  Blends are like digraphs, however with blends you can hear both sounds.  (sl, tr, sp, cl, etc.)

Reading:

Our theme for the week is St. Patrick’s Day and leprechauns.  We will be reading the book How to Catch a Leprechaun.

We will have a STEM project this week.  Students will be building a leprechaun trap in class and leaving it up over the weekend.  Hopefully we will be able to catch a sneaky leprechaun!

Math:

We will be working with measurement this week while also continuing to practice addition/subtraction and basic number sense.

Religion:

Our second Mass is right after Spring Break!  I will be sending parts home by the end of next week.  If your child has a reading part, he/she will be able to practice during Spring Break.

Each student will be picking a prayer partner to pray for during Lent.  On Friday Mrs. Tieken challenged us all to be “Good Deed Doers.”  She gave each one of us a plastic Easter egg to fill with 7 good deeds we will try to do during Lent.  The eggs will be presented at the offertory each week at our school mass as a reminder to make sure we are working on our good deeds.  Ask your child what good deeds he will be trying to do during Lent.  On Easter Monday we will get our eggs back so we can reflect on how well we fulfilled our good deeds.
