The students had a great time on our Field Trip last week!  Seeing The Cat in the Hat live was a great introduction to Read Across America Week which we will celebrate in Kindergarten.

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.

This week, we will celebrate Read Across America by reading some of my favorite books in class.  Some books just don’t fit into a theme or a holiday, so this is a good time for me to share some of my favorite books with the class that we might otherwise not have a chance to read.

Beginning on Friday, we will celebrate all things Dr. Seuss!  This Friday, 3/1, we will join the 1st grade class in a green eggs and ham breakfast.  This is, of course, to celebrate the beloved Dr. Seuss book Green Eggs and Ham.  Please encourage your child to try this breakfast!  This will be my fifth time having green eggs and ham with a Kindergarten class, and I am always pleasantly surprised to see that most students LOVE it (even though they may be hesitant at first).  The following week will be all about Dr. Seuss!!!  We will have a special way to celebrate each day.  Look for more information to come home on that soon!

Reading:

This week will be mostly review.  I will be testing the students on February sight words.  We will start “How to” writing.

Awhile back, I signed our class up to receive toothbrushes from Colgate to celebrate Dental Health month in February.  From what I read, it was iffy if we would actually receive the toothbrushes (many teachers have signed up but did not receive them).  I was surprised when I did receive the box of toothbrushes on Friday afternoon!  We will discuss how to take care of our teeth a bit this week, and students will bring home a toothbrush from Colgate.  Yay!

Math:

Last week we started subtraction!  I was happy to see the kids really interested in learning this new skill.  Ask your child to explain Gus the Plus and Linus the Minus to you.  We will continue this and wrap up a lot of other math things (including shapes) this week.
