We will have our Valentine’s Day party this Thursday from 1:30-2:30. If you ‘d like to attend or are helping, please come to our room at 1:30. All are welcome! The children are welcome to bring Valentines for all of their classmates (we have 18 students) if they would like to. If your child is planning on bringing Valentines to pass out, they need to bring them to school when they arrive Thursday morning. We will be passing them out shortly after lunch before we go to library. There is not enough time to do this during the party. The children do not need to write their classmates names on their Valentines. Please just have your child put their name on the Valentines they are handing out so their classmates will know who it is from. This helps cut down on the amount of time it takes to pass them out. Thanks for your help! Have a wonderful week! Below is a preview of some of the things we’ll be doing this week:
This week we will work on reading & spelling digraph ay, combination ar, digraph ch and combination or. The sight words that will be introduced with this week’s Phonics lessons are: early, earth, heard, learn, word, work & world.
This week’s spelling words are: far, much, play, gave, upon, after, handy, dribble, spell, shapeless, says* & should* (* words are not to, be sounded out) with BONUS WORDS: February, Valentine & spirit. The children will also be given a sentence to write: We stayed up until three. The pre-test will be on Wednesday and the final test on Friday. If the children spell all of the words (including writing the sentence & bonus words IF they accept the challenge) correct on Wednesday, they will NOT have to take the test on Friday.
We are ready to begin our 5th reading book. This week we will be reading “Olivia” (Main Selection). The children will bring their books home on Monday evening for homework. Please read pgs. 10 & 11 before reading the story & discuss the vocabulary words to make sure the children have a clear understanding of these words. They will bring home a leveled reader on Wednesday to read for homework. PLEASE be sure the children return their books the NEXT day so they have them for reading here at school. It’s a good idea to ask the “Think and Compare” questions at the end of each selection. The children are really doing a good job reading their stories each week! We couldn’t do it without your help and support! THANK YOU!
We will continue working on Chapter 6: Count & Model Numbers. In this chapter we will be counting by 1’s to 120, counting forward by 1’s & 10’s from any number and understanding 10’s & 1’s (the children should be pretty good at this because we work on place value daily as part of our calendar activities).
We will begin Chapter 13/Jesus Calls Apostles. We will talk about Jesus’ apostles and what they were called to do. We will talk about how all of us can be apostles and spread God’s Word. **Many of the children have been asking when the 1st grade gets to lead the mass since the past 2 times we were supposed to have mass it was canceled. 🙁 The children who were supposed to participate are anxiously awaiting their parts. The 1st grade will plan the mass on Thursday, March 21st. I’ll send home the parts when the date gets closer for the children who did not get to participate due to the cancellations.**
