Thanks to all who helped with our Halloween party last week!  We all had a great time!  It’s hard to believe that it’s already November.  Please be sure to check out the link to our Sign Up Genius to see how you can help with our blessing basket .  There will be 2 laundry baskets outside of our classroom this week that you can place your donations in.  I’m still waiting to hear the size of the family we are helping, but I will update you as soon as I know.  We appreciate any donations you are able to help with for our blessing basket.  Just a reminder that I will NOT be at school on Tuesday.  Please be sure you talk to your child about being on their BEST behavior for Mr. Antle & Mrs. Adams.  Thanks in advance for your help!  Here is a preview of some of the things we’ll be doing this week:

This week we will work on reading & spelling consonant /w/ with sw & tw blends, vc/cv syllable division (rule 2), “sneaky e” rule with a-e, o-e & u-e as well as spelling with final ke.  The children have been doing a good job learning many of the rules that are going to help them decode & encode words.  I hope they have been sharing some of these rules with you (they are always listed on the back of the Phonics pages that we do together in class).  The sight words that will be introduced with this week’s Phonics lessons are:  want, was, where, two, done & one.  Please continue working on the high frequency words on the back side of the Saxon Phonics pages, especially if your child is having difficulty reading these words.  It’s important that when working on sight words/high frequency words, that your child does NOT sound them out.  These words are to be read strictly by sight.

This week’s spelling words are:   sat, dog, glad, cost, milk, sock, street, thank, needed, resting, color* & friend* (* words are not to be sounded out) with BONUS WORDS:  November, rested & worked.  The children will also be given a sentence to write:  The green frog jumped.  The pre-test will be on Wednesday and the final test on Friday.  If the children spell all of the words (including writing the sentence & bonus words IF they accept the challenge) correct on Wednesday, they will NOT have to take the test on Friday.  The children are doing a great job!  Thanks for your help at home!  It makes a difference!

We have finished our 2nd reading book and will start our 3rd one this week.  Our story this week is “Kate’s Game.”  The children will bring home their reading books on Monday for homework.  They are expected to read (can be read to if needed) the “Get Ready Story” (A Good Game for All) and the “Main Selection” (Kate’s Game).  They will bring home a leveled reader on Wednesday to read for homework.  PLEASE be sure the children return their books the NEXT day so they have them for reading here at school.  It’s a good idea to ask the “Think and Compare” questions at the end of each selection.  Here are some “reading reminders” when helping your child read:  Take a picture walk before beginning to read the story,  have them look for words they know (sight words), encourage them to sound out words using the Phonics rules we’ve been learning, encourage them to skip a word they don’t know to see what the sentence is about & to think of a word that would make sense with the same initial letter sound and sometimes “we” just have to tell them the word.  🙂

We will finish our chapter on Addition Strategies.  I had hoped to finish it last week, but our schedule was a little off with our Halloween party, hearing tests, Spirit Day & a couple other changes in our normal, daily schedule.  The XtraMath computer program is another way for the children to practice their addition and subtraction facts.

We will finish Chapter 6/God Speaks To Us.

**November Birthdays:  Finley & Maddie.  If you would like to be a guest reader for your FAVORITE 1ST GRADER’s BIRTHDAY, please let me know so we can arrange a date/time for you to come in and read to our class.  If your schedule does not allow, please send in a book of their choice on their birthday (or close to if a weekend date) and I will read it to the class.  Happy Birthday to all of our November 1st graders!**

Important Dates/Reminders:

*11/6  Mr. Antle will be subbing in the morning & Mrs. Adams will be subbing in the afternoon.  If there are any changes in your child’s after school plans, please be sure to let the office know since I will be away from school on Tuesday.  PRIDE meeting @ 6:30 p.m.

*11/7  PRIDE meeting NUT day for students whose parents attend Tuesday evening’s meeting.

*11/12  Donuts with Dad from 7:00-7:50 a.m. in the PLC.  We will honor our Veterans at Monday assembly following Donuts with Dad.

*11/15   First grade will take part in mass (reading parts will come home on 11/9 OR 11/12).  Change in lunch schedule:  LC-2nd grade students will eat from 11:30-12:00 due to the older students needing to eat before they leave for a play at Roncalli.

*11/21-11/23  NO SCHOOL/Thanksgiving Break

*The children are no longer allowed to wear uniform shorts to school until after spring break.  During the months of November-March, the girls may wear navy pants & white shirts on mass days.  A few girls have been wearing leggings under their skirts.  Leggings are not allowed, however, solid color navy or white, opaque or cable knit tights are allowed.  Please refer to the handbook link Handbook 2018-2019 for any questions regarding the school uniform.  Please be sure to write your child’s name in their school sweatshirts, jackets, coats, etc.  The lost & found is growing.  We find several items a day that do NOT have names in them.  🙁

*Please be sure to go over your child’s papers with them that come home in their folder so they can learn from any mistakes that they may be making.  Thanks for your help!
