It’s hard to believe that the first quarter ends in 3 weeks!  If you attended “Back To School Night” then you had an opportunity to sign up for Parent/Teacher Conferences in October.  Mrs. Floyd will be sending out confirmation letters soon to inform you of your date/time.  Once you receive this information, please let me know ASAP if you need to make any changes.  I look forward to meeting with all of you soon to discuss your child’s progress.  The children are off to a great start and are excited to learn.  I truly enjoy seeing how eager they are to read as well as write during journal time.  Please be sure to continue working with your child in any areas you see they might be struggling with and please don’t hesitate to ask me for suggestions on ways you can help them at home.  If your child’s STEEP results indicate they could use some extra help in Reading or Math, you will receive a letter from Mrs. Floyd within the next few weeks.  If so, your child will work on a computer program with Ms. Edwards 4 days a week from 8-8:30.   Below is a preview of some of the things we’ll be doing this week:

This week we will work on reading & spelling consonants /h/, /g/ (both hard & soft /g/ sounds) with the blend gl, /r/ with the blends dr, fr, gr, pr, spr, str & tr and reading & spelling consonant /k/ with blend sk.  The children have been doing a good job learning many of the rules that are going to help them decode & encode words.  I hope they have been sharing some of these rules with you (they are always listed on the back of the Phonics pages that we do together in class).  The sight words that will be introduced with this week’s Phonics lessons are:  do, into, to, who, you, your & color.  Please continue working on the high frequency words on the back side of the Saxon Phonics pages, especially if your child is having difficulty reading these words.  It’s important that when working on sight words/high frequency words, that your child does NOT sound them out.  These words are to be read strictly by sight.

The children did a GREAT JOB on their 1st Spelling Test!  I’m sure you were just as PROUD of them as I was when you saw how well they did.  Keep up the good work!  Your child should have brought home the following list of words on Friday:  a, an, at, tap, lot, nap, tan, zip, lap & pit.  The children will also be given a sentence to write:  Nap on it.  The pre-test will be on Wednesday and the final test on Friday.  If the children spell all of the words (including writing the sentence) correct on Wednesday, they will NOT have to take the test on Friday.  **Please be sure that  if your child is practicing writing they are only using capital letters if there is a name or if it’s the first word of a sentence.**

Our story this week is, “Soccer.”  The children will bring home their reading books on Monday for homework.  They are expected to read (can be read to if needed) the “Get Ready Story” (Help for Hank) and the “Main Selection” (Soccer).  They will bring home a leveled reader on Wednesday to read for homework.  If you feel like your child is struggling with the leveled reader I send home on Wednesdays, please let me know.  I have a few different levels and can change the books out if it becomes too frustrating.  PLEASE be sure they return their books the NEXT day so they have them for reading here at school.  It’s a good idea to ask the “Think and Compare” questions at the end of each selection.  **We have been  reading our first chapter book together, Flat Stanley, and will be finishing it up this week.  The children are really enjoying it!  We are planning on taking Flat Stanley on some more adventures soon.  Stay tuned for some fun Flat Stanley homework over fall break…**

This week we will continue working on Chapter 2/Subtraction Concepts.  Here are some of the vocabulary words we will work on:  compare, difference, fewer, minus, subtract, subtraction sentence.

We will finish up Chapter 3/God is Our Father and will begin Chapter 4/God Our Father Is Holy.  **This week mass will be on Wednesday INSTEAD of Thursday.  The children will wear their mass uniforms on WEDNESDAY.**

Important Dates/Reminders:

*9/19  Mass at 8:30.  All are welcome!

*9/20  There will be no mass on Thursday.  Todd Jadlow, former IU & NBA basketball player, is coming to St. Rose to talk to our students at 8:00 a.m.  He will talk to the children about good sportsmanship & life lessons that are learned through athletics & team activities.  We are looking forward to his visit!

*9/21  Field Trip permission slips and money due.  If you haven’t done your Safe & Sacred Training, please do so.  The sooner the better so we don’t run into a delay in receiving your information.  Please log onto: .   Please let me know if you have misplaced your permission slip so I can send another one home to you ASAP.

*9/22 First day of Fall, my favorite time of year (as well as spring 🙂 ).

*9/27  Trash bag orders and money due.  Thanks for your help with PRIDE’s fundraiser!

*9/28  Local author, Kimberly Hoffman, will be visiting us to share her new book.  If you would like to order one of her books, please check out the attached flyer/order form by clicking on the following link:  Author Visit

*There are a few students that are still struggling to tie their shoes.  This is not a skill that is taught here at school, but is a life skill that they are expected to learn.  Please continue working on this if they did not “master” it in Kindergarten.

*Please be sure you are putting your child’s name on all of their belongings.  Our “Lost & Found” is growing and many of the items we see do not have names in them which makes it harder to find the owner.  As a mom of 3, I know these belongings are not cheap so we definitely want to know who these items belong to if they are lost.
