Welcome back!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed time with family and friends!  Isabell and her family delivered the 1st grade school and religious education blessing baskets to the families we helped out.  She said they were “very happy!” Thanks again for your help!  The next four weeks will be very busy as we prepare for Christmas and finish up the 2nd quarter here at school!  This time of year can be hard to focus with all of the “holiday distractions” both inside and outside of school.  Your gentle reminders to your children to continue to do their best and work hard is greatly appreciated! 🙂  I know I’ve said it before, but this school year is really going by fast.  We still have a lot of work to do, but the children are doing GREAT!  I’m so PROUD of them all!   Below is a preview of some of the things we’ll be doing this week:


This week we will work on reading & spelling vowel /y/, long /i/ sound of vowel /y/, spelling suffix -ing with /y/, long /e/ sound of vowel /y/, suffix -y, reading & spelling combination “er”, “bossy r,” reading & spelling trigraph “igh” and coding & reading compound words.  The sight words that will be introduced with this week’s Phonics lessons are:  love, move, any, many, another, brother, mother, other, only & something.  It’s important that the children are reviewing these sight words at home each week (we have learned 56 words so far with our Saxon lessons).   Thanks for working on these words!  It truly makes a difference!


The following list of words was sent home the Friday before our 2-day week:  we, with, long, must, like, brisk, clock, sleep, sanding, insect, does* & been* The words followed by an asterisk are sight words and need to be memorized, not “sounded out.”  The children will also be given a sentence to write:  Does the clock ring at ten?  The pre-test will be on Wednesday and the final test on Friday.  If the children spell all of the words (including writing the sentence) correct on Wednesday, they will not have to take the test on Friday.  I am pleased with how well the children have been doing on the Spelling test each week.  The children have noticed that the words are getting harder, but they have really been working hard.  If you would like suggestions for heping your child study for their words each week, please let me know.


The children will be reading “Me and My Shadow,” Time for Kids articles (Light Game & Short Shadows, Long Shadows) for Monday evenings homework.  They will bring home a leveled reader on Wednesday to read for homework.  PLEASE be sure the children return their books the NEXT day so they have them for reading here at school.  It’s a good idea to ask the “Think and Compare” questions at the end of each selection.  Here are some “reading reminders” when helping your child read:  Take a picture walk before beginning to read the story,  have them look for words they know (sight words), encourage them to sound out words using the Phonics rules we’ve been learning, encourage them to skip a word they don’t know to see what the sentence is about & to think of a word that would make sense with the same initial letter sound and sometimes “we” just have to tell them the word.  🙂  The children are really doing a good job reading their stories each week!  I’ve seen a lot of progress over the past 9 weeks!  We couldn’t do it without your help and support!  THANK YOU!


We will begin Chapter 4.  In this chapter we will work on subtraction strategies such as counting back.  We will also work on how to solve subtraction word problems.  I am pleased with how well the children are doing with addition and subtraction.  If you’d like for your child to work on the Xtra Math program at home, but have lost your login information, please let me know.  I’d be happy to send home a new form.


We will begin Chapter 10/God Chose Mary and Joseph.  In this chapter we will discuss why God chose Mary and Joseph to be the mother and foster father of Jesus.  Towards the end of the week we will begin to talk about the season of Advent that begins on Sunday, December 3.

12/8  Feast of the Immaculate Conception/Holy Day of Obligation.  Our weekly all school mass will be on Friday at 8:30, all are welcome.  Students are to wear their mass uniforms.  Girls are now allowed to wear navy pants/white shirts for mass until March if they wish due to colder temperatures during the winter months.

12/13 & 12/14  PRIDE’s Santa Shop (more information to come)

12/14  Be sure to mark your calendar for grades K-5 Christmas Program  beginning at 6:30 p.m.

12/21  End of 2nd quarter.  Early Dismissal/Christmas Break begins at 1:00 on Thursday.  Our classroom Christmas party will be from 12-1.  The following people signed up to help at Back To School Night:  Craft/Kasey Wooten; Game/Mariah Brooks; Snack/Alicia Louden; Drink Pouches & Napkins/Debbie Houchin.  There will be NO SCHOOL on Friday 12/22.  School resumes on Tuesday, January 9.
