Don’t forget to change your clocks before going to bed this Saturday evening! Believe it or not, it’s time for our clocks to “fall back” an hour. It seems like we just started October, doesn’t it? I want to THANK ALL OF YOU for coming to parent/teacher conferences last week. I always tell my students how blessed they are to have such wonderful families who care so much about their education and having 100% attendance at conferences last week is just another example of that! THANK YOU for your continued support! It truly makes a difference! We have another busy week with our Halloween party Tuesday afternoon, All Saints Day mass on Wednesday and Spirit Day on Friday afternoon. We didn’t get as far as I planned last week with many changes in our schedule and 2 shortened days, but we should be able to get back on track this week. If you have not returned your child’s report card/STEEP scores, please do so ASAP. The children made all of their finishing touches on the class book they have been working on & the final draft is on its way to the publisher. If you ordered a book, I will let you know when they arrive. Thanks for returning all of the order forms. We WILL receive a free book for our classroom since they were all returned. If you did not order a book, your child will get a chance to bring home our free class book for a day so they can show you their work. They are so excited! Please be sure the children are bringing a jacket or coat to school EVERY DAY. Many of the children have been complaining about being cold for our morning recess (10:30). We will go out all winter long (weather permitting) as long as the temperature is above 25 degrees. Just a reminder that shorts are not to be worn again until after Spring Break. Many of you are aware of our annual Blessing Baskets (if not, stay tuned…), now that November is almost here please look for an e-mail/Sign-Up Genius soon. Below is a preview of some of the things we’ll be doing this week:
This week we will continue working on the reading & spelling vowel-consonant-e rule AKA “Sneaky e” (i-e; e-e), reading & spelling contractions, reading & spelling letters “X & Y” and possibly reading & spelling digraph sh & the blend shr. I have been noticing that the children are using many of the rules we have been learning to help them figure out words they don’t know when we are reading (and spelling) during class. 🙂 Hopefully they are doing the same for you. The sight words that will be introduced with this week’s Phonics lessons are: sure, don’t, won’t, bought, brought, fought, thought, could, should & would (may not get to last 3 words this week). Please continue working on the high frequency words on the back side of the Saxon Phonics pages, especially if your child is having difficulty reading these words. I do not assess these words every day, however, on the days that I do I will circle any of the words that your child was unable to read for me. Thanks for working on these words at home! It truly makes a difference!
Once again, you will notice 2 words with an asterisk on your child’s spelling list this week. These words are sight words and need to be memorized, not “sounded out.” The following list of words was sent home last Friday: see, red, that, this, back, sing, bring, think, green, three, are* & from*. The children will also be given a sentence to write: The bag is from Pam. The pre-test will be on Wednesday and the final test on Friday. If the children spell all of the words (including writing the sentence) correct on Wednesday, they will not have to take the test on Friday. I am pleased with how well the children have been doing on the Spelling test each week. The children have noticed that the words are getting harder, but they have really been working hard. If you would like suggestions for heping your child study for their words each week, please let me know.
Our story this week is “On My Way To School.” The children will bring home their reading books on Monday for homework. They are expected to read (can be read to if needed) the “Get Ready Story” (Glen is Late!) and the “Main Selection” (On My Way To School). They will bring home a leveled reader on Wednesday to read for homework. If you feel like your child is struggling with the leveled reader I send home on Wednesdays, please let me know. I have a few different levels and can change the books out if it becomes too frustrating. PLEASE be sure the children return their books the NEXT day so they have them for reading here at school. Each week we’ve been missing a few books for reading time. It’s a good idea to ask the “Think and Compare” questions at the end of each selection.
We will continue working on addition strategies such as counting on, adding doubles, doubles + 1 and adding in any order. Hopefully everyone received the information I sent home last week about Xtra Math. I already have a few students working on this program 10-15 minutes a day at home. Keep up the good work! I’d love to see all of my students taking some time each day to work on Xtra Math.
We will finish up Chapter 7/We Pray To God Our Father. We will talk about All Saints Day (Holy Day of Obligation) and will celebrate mass together on Wednesday. There will also be mass at 6:30 p.m. for all who cannot make it to our 8:30 a.m. mass.
10/31 Halloween NUT day. Students may wear black, orange or a Halloween shirt. Our Halloween Party begins @ 1:30. Students can bring their costumes (no make up please) to change into before the party if they’d like. All are welcome to attend the party. We can always use the help. If you are planning to attend, you can come to our classroom at 1:20 to help us get ready. The following parents signed up at Back To School Night to help: Craft/Mrs. Louden, Game/Mrs. Marshall, Snack/Ms. Smith, Drink Pouches/Boxes & Napkins/Mrs. Goins. If you signed up to help, but cannot attend the party you can send in your donations that morning. Thanks for your help!
11/1 Mass @ 8:30 for All Saints Day (ALL are welcome!). We will NOT have mass on Thursday. Students need to wear mass uniforms on Wednesday this week.
11/2 PRIDE meeting at 6:30 p.m.
