My FAVORITE season has arrived! ūüôā Happy Fall! ¬†It’s hard to believe October is almost here! ¬†THANKS to all who supported PRIDE’s Dine-To-Donate last week! ¬†I will NOT be at school on Thursday, September 28th. ¬†I will be attending a training session on Accelerated Reading/STAR Reading. ¬†Mrs. Salazar will be subbing for me. ¬†Please remind your favorite first grader to be on their BEST behavior for Mrs. Salazar. ¬†I know she is looking forward to spending the day with the children. ¬†I’m hoping to get Accelerated Reading up and running in first grade for the 2nd quarter. ¬†Thanks for your patience! ¬†Stay tuned…. ¬†Parent/Teacher conferences are quickly approaching. ¬†Mrs. Floyd will be sending home letters the 1st week of October confirming your conference date/time. ¬†Below is a preview of some of the things we’ll be doing this week:

Phonics:

This week we will work on spelling with “ck & final k,” digraph th, digraph ng & suffix -ing and suffix -ed. I have been noticing that the children are using many of the rules we have been learning to help them figure out words they don’t know when we are reading (and spelling) during class. ¬†ūüôā ¬†Hopefully they are doing the same for you. ¬†The sight words that will be introduced with this week’s Phonics lessons are: ¬†their, there, come, some, does & goes. ¬†Please continue working on the high frequency words on the back side of the Saxon Phonics pages, especially if your child is having difficulty reading these words. ¬†I do not assess these words every day, however, on the days that I do I will circle any of the words that your child was unable to read for me. ¬†Thanks for working on these words at home! ¬†It truly makes a difference!

Spelling:

The children had another GREAT week in Spelling! ¬†Everyone spelled all of our words correctly and wrote the sentence correctly. ¬† WOW! ¬†I’m sure you were just as PROUD of them as I was when you saw how well they did. ¬†Keep up the good work! ¬†Your child should have brought home the following list of words on Friday: ¬†as, is, so, its, sit, and, did, last, stop & land. ¬†The children will also be given a sentence to write: ¬†I stop a lot. ¬†The pre-test will be on Wednesday and the final test on Friday. ¬†If the children spell all of the words (including writing the sentence) correct on Wednesday, they will NOT have to take the test on Friday.

Reading:

We finished our 1st reading book and will begin our 2nd one this week. ¬†Our story this week is, “Animal Moms & Dads.” ¬†The children will bring home their reading books on Monday for homework. ¬†They are expected to read (can be read to if needed) the “Get Ready Story” (One Frog, Two Frog) and the “Main Selection” (Animal Mom & Dads). ¬†They will bring home a leveled reader on Wednesday to read for homework. ¬†If you feel like your child is struggling with the leveled reader I send home on Wednesdays, please let me know. ¬†I have a few different levels and can change the books out if it becomes too frustrating. ¬†PLEASE be sure they return their books the NEXT day so they have them for reading here at school. ¬†It’s a good idea to ask the “Think and Compare” questions at the end of each selection. ¬†**We recently finished reading Flat Stanley together. ¬†The children really enjoyed it! ¬†We are planning on taking Flat Stanley on some more adventures soon. ¬†Look for information to come home this week, possibly Tuesday.**

Math:

We will continue working on Subtraction.   Here are a few terms we will be working on in this chapter:  minus, difference, subtraction sentence, fewer and how many more.

Religion:

Chapter 5/God Shares His Life With Us. ¬†In this chapter we will talk about Baptism and we will also learn about “The Smiling Saint,” Saint Julie Billiart. ¬†She loved making people smile. ¬†Ask your child how we’ve been making some people smile who need our prayers. ¬†The children did a GREAT JOB at mass last week! ¬†They love getting to take part in mass. ¬†Thanks for your help with their reading parts! ¬†I’m very PROUD of the children and I’m sure you are too!
