We were certainly blessed with beautiful weather for our parish fall festival this weekend!  Thanks to all who helped in any way and thanks to all who came out to show your support!  It’s always nice to see everyone enjoying some fun, food & fellowship.  Below is a preview of some of the things we’ll be doing this week:

This week we will work on reading and spelling consonants g, r, k & c.  The children have been doing a good job learning many of the rules that are going to help them decode & encode words.  I hope they have been sharing some of these rules with you (they are always listed on the Phonic pages that come home).  The sight words that will be introduced with this week’s Phonics lessons are:  do, into, to, who, you, your & color.  Please continue working on the high frequency words on the back side of the Saxon Phonics pages, especially if your child is having difficulty reading these words.

This week we will have our 1st spelling test.  Most of the children were really excited to hear this, especially since they’ve been asking since the 1st day of school “When will we get to take spelling tests?”  🙂 Your child should have brought home the following list of words on Friday:  on, no, not, top, pop, I, in, it, pin & tip.  The children will also be given a sentence to write:  Pin it on.  The pre-test will be on Wednesday and the final test on Friday.  If the children spell all of the words (including writing the sentence) correct on Wednesday, they will NOT have to take the test on Friday.

Our story this week is, “Pet Tricks.”  The children will bring home their reading books on Monday for homework.  They are expected to read (can be read to if needed) the “Get Ready Story” (Come Down, Brad!) and the “Main Selection” (Pet Tricks).  They will bring home a leveled reader on Wednesday to read for homework.  PLEASE be sure they return their books the NEXT day so they have them for reading here at school.  If your child is having difficulty reading, please read to them and have them follow along.  Then if you read a 2nd time, they can “echo” you if need be (they will know what I mean by this 🙂 ).  It’s a good idea to ask the “Think and Compare” questions at the end of each selection.

I hope to finish up our chapter on addition this week.  We didn’t get as far as I had hoped last week since it was only a 4-day week.  We will look at what we notice about the sum when the order of the addends changes and will work on addition to 10.

We will finish up Chapter 3 and begin Chapter 4/God Our Father Is Holy.   This week we will talk about the holiness of God and how everything about God is holy, including our churches.  The first grade class gets to plan (and participate in) the mass for NEXT Thursday 9/21.  If your child has a reading part, you will find it in their folder on Friday.  Please be sure they practice their reading parts at home.  Thanks for your help!
