I hope everyone enjoyed  their 3-day weekend!  I can’t believe it’s September already.  Thanks so much for all of the snacks that were sent in last week.  I truly appreciate your generosity!  We should be set for several weeks now.  🙂  Also, thank you for the Scholastic Book orders that were placed.  We were able to earn several free books for our classroom library and with the September book order, every student in my class will be receiving a FREE Elephant and Piggie book because we had a $50 order (even if your child did not order a book 🙂 ).  Below is a preview of some of the things we’ll be doing this week:

This week we will work on reading and spelling consonants d, f & h.  The children have been doing a good job learning many of the rules that are going to help them decode & encode words.  I hope they have been sharing some of these rules with you (they are always listed on the Phonic pages that come home).  Please be sure you are reviewing the high frequency words on the back side of the phonics pages when you see them.  It’s important that the children can read these words by sight.

Our story this week is, “How You Grew.”  The children will bring home their reading books on Tuesday this week (due to Labor Day) for homework.  They are expected to read (can be read to if needed) the “Get Ready Story” (I Am A Big Kid) and the “Main Selection” (How You Grew).  They will bring home a leveled reader on Thursday to read for homework.  PLEASE be sure they return their books the NEXT day so they have them for reading here at school.  If your child is having difficulty reading, please read to them and have them follow along.  Then if you read a 2nd time, they can “echo” you if need be (they will know what I mean by this 🙂 ).  It’s a good idea to ask the “Think and Compare” questions at the end of each selection.

We will continue with Chapter 1 on addition (we are getting close to the end of the chapter).  This week we will look at what happens when a zero is added to a number and what we notice about the sum when the order of the addends changes.

We will begin Chapter 3/God Is Our Father.  We will talk about how God cares for us and how we can care for others.  Last Friday the 5th grade invited us to their classroom to show us a slide show they made about Hurricane Harvey and a Relief Project they are doing to help the family members of one of our St. Rose families (Slade family).  We were very impressed with the 5th graders knowledge of the hurricane and are PROUD of their compassion and willingness to help others.  Please consider helping Ms. Hammond’s class in their relief efforts by  sending in “change” (bills will be accepted too) with your child on Thursday.  It would be helpful if the 1st graders bring their money in a small envelope or small Zipoc baggie (we don’t want to lose any money on our way to church or hear it hitting the pews during mass 🙂 ).  The 5th grade will have a special collection at mass this Thursday for the Slade family.  Thanks in advance for your help!  Together we continue to “Do Small Things With Great Love.”
