Happy Solar Eclipse day!

We finished our first FULL week of school on Friday and we’re all still smiling! ūüôā ¬†The children are off to a great start! ¬† Thanks to all who were able to make it to Back To School Night last Thursday. ¬†It was nice to see everyone! ¬†Please let me know if you have any questions after reading over the handouts. ¬†I’m happy to answer any questions that you may have about 1st grade. ¬†As I mentioned at Back To School Night, this is a learning year for all of us (even me ūüôā ) so THANK YOU for your support! ¬†Just a reminder that Mrs. Adams, my wonderful mentor, will be subbing for me on Friday 8/25. ¬†If you need to get a message to your child about a change in their dismissal plans, please call the school office or e-mail Mrs. Carnes at [email protected] ¬†Thanks to all who sent in snacks! Below is a preview of some of the things we’ll be doing this week.

This week we will continue working on initial letter sounds for the letters T, P, I (short & long vowel sound), L and A (short & long vowel sound).

We will start our 1st story this week, “Pam and Sam.” ¬†The children will bring home their reading books on Monday for homework. ¬†They are expected to read (can be read to if needed) the “Get Ready Story” (Can Pat Jump?) and the “Main Selection” (Pam and Sam). ¬†They will bring home a leveled reader on Wednesday to read for homework. ¬†PLEASE be sure they return their books the NEXT day so they have them for reading here at school. ¬†If your child is having difficulty reading, please read to them and have them follow along. ¬†Then if you read a 2nd time, they can “echo” you if need be (they will know what I mean by this ūüôā ). ¬†It’s a good idea to ask the “Think and Compare” questions at the end of each selection.

We will begin Chapter 1 (Addition Concepts) in our new Go Math series.  Here are a few terms they will be learning more about in Chapter 1:  addends, sum & addition sentence.

Chapter 2/God is Good! ¬†We will talk about God’s Creation. ¬†We will discuss ways we can do our part to keep God’s creation beautiful. We will also learn about St. Rose of Lima this week as we prepare to celebrate her Feast Day on Wednesday. ¬†We hope you’ll join us for mass on Wednesday for this special day!

Important Dates:

8/21 ¬† ¬†Due to the eclipse, dismissal will be at 3:20 today. ¬†The bus will not arrive at St. Rose until 3:40 to pick up our students, therefore your child will arrive home later than usual. ¬†If you choose to pick your child up any earlier, please be sure to sign them out in the school office. ¬†Be sure to ask your child what he/she learned from Mr. Larmour’s “eclipse” presentation this morning and about our “viewing” in the PLC this afternoon that Mr. Setnor is going to set up for us!

8/23  St. Rose of Lima Feast Day, we will be attending mass at 8:30 (mass uniforms).  ALL ARE WELCOME!  We will NOT have mass on Thursday this week.
