RELIGION    We will start on Chapter 11 this week.  In this chapter we will talk about how we serve others and ways to be a Missionary.  We will also read about Augustus Tolton, America’s first African American Priest.  This week we will also begin our Lenten Activities.  We will do a few activities each day as we make our spiritual journey to Christ’s resurrection.

**Don’t forget students should wear Mass Uniform on mass days!  This is blue pants and white shirts for the boys.  Plaid skirt or jumper with a white shirt for the girls!  (Girls will be able to wear pants for Mass Uniform starting in November.)

SPELLING Starting this week we will be reading “Charlotte’s Web.”  We will be reading this for the next 3 weeks.  Although we will NOT have a spelling test this week due to our ISTEP tests, I have attached the Spelling Words in the link below for weeks two and three.

Charlotte’s Web Spelling Words

READING For the next three weeks we will be reading “Charlotte’s Web.” Most of the reading will be completed in class, but there will be some nights when the students will be required to finish reading a chapter or complete a worksheet at home.  This week, we will NOT have a test over the first few chapters due to ISTEP tests.

GRAMMAR /VOCAB.Our Grammar and Vocabulary work will come from our “Charlotte’s Web” story.

MATH   We will be starting Chapter 13 this week.  In this chapter we will be working on fractions.  We will talk about parts of a whole, parts of a set, and equivalent fractions to start.

Please keep working on addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts at home!  The more practice the better!  🙂

SCIENCE –  So, we did not get as far in Science as I wanted, due to our ISTEP prep we did last week.  We will work on finishing the chapter this week and probably have a test next week.

SOCIAL STUDIES   We will focus on Science for the rest of this week.  We will start another chapter in Social Studies by the end of next week.

TEACHER NOTES –

DATES TO KEEP IN MIND –

LENT BEGINS – This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season.  Please join us for Mass on Wednesday if you are able.  As a part of our Lenten Journey, the 3rd grade class will participate in the Stations of the Cross every Friday.  The times may vary, but I will try to let you know ahead of time when we will be doing this so if you would like to join us you are more than welcome.  This Friday, we will begin around 1:15 in the Church.

This Week – We will be taking the ISTEP tests this week.  We will do a practice test on Monday, Feb. 27 and then test on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  It will be very important that students get a good nights sleep, eat a good breakfast, and come to school on time and be ready to go!  We will start early, so it is important that they are there on time so we can get the regular “morning” things completed before we start our tests.  Wednesday and Thursday will start with Mass. We will celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass and our regular All School Mass on Thursday.  We will take our ISTEP tests following Mass on those two days.

Friday, March 3 –  Stations of the Cross (1:15) Spirit Day (2pm) and End of the Grading Period

Wednesday, March 8 – Report Cards will come home

Friday, March 10 – Honor’s Day in the PLC at 2pm – Join us to celebrate our accomplishments!

Thursday, March 16 – We will be visited by a group called SMOKEBUSTERS!  Respiratory therapists and the super-hero character “Super RT” present this lively, interactive, convocation-style program featuring skits, demonstrations and simulations. Third graders learn about the dangers of tobacco and how to say “No!” All parents are invited and welcomed to attend this program in our classroom.  It will start at 10am and last about an hour.  Please let me know if you have any questions or plan to attend.  I have done this for many years and believe it is a great program for our children to hear.

Friday, March 17 and Tuesday, March 21 – As part of our “Charlotte’s Web” unit, it has become a tradition to make paper-mache pigs!  If you like to get your hands gooey, and you love pigs…you would be a PERFECT candidate to help us out!  I am still working on the details, but looking at making the pigs on Friday, March 17 around 12:00pm and painting them on Tuesday, March 21 around 1:30pm.  If you are able to help either day or both, please let me know.  No experience required!  Just a love of all things kids…and piggies! 🙂

TARDIES –  It is very important for the kids to be at school on time each day.  When the kids come in late, they miss an important time in the classroom.  My mornings are set up for some “new day socializing”. This is chance for the kids to chat and get caught up from the day before.  It is also a time of early morning directions on how the day is going to go, what to do for morning work, and our daily prayer circle. If they are late on Fridays, they are missing the same thing in Art class, since we have Art first thing at 8am. When they are late, they seem to be more frazzled because they are trying to get caught up and figure out what is going on in the classroom.  I know some mornings can be rough, but please try to have the students to school by 8am when the tardy bell rings.

**PE NOTE – On the days that we change for PE (Thursday and Friday) the students will need to be sure and have pants to put on for dismissal. This could be just a pair of sweats/pajama pants/etc. or their uniform pants.  As we get into the colder months, I do not want them walking out to the cars in shorts.

**Please be sure to read the ROAR! for more St. Rose School Information!
