Letter Sound Tree

The kids did a GREAT job making their ornaments for our “letter sound” Christmas tree. I know many of the children are walking down to the room by themselves now, but if you get a chance it’s worth stopping by to see. They LOVE showing off their GREAT work!

Happy Birthday to our Kindergarten students that have December birthdays OR 1/2 birthdays:  Oliver & Maggie; 1/2 birthday Roman!  If  you would like to read your Kindergarten student’s favorite book in honor of their birthday, please send me an e-mail so we can set up a day and time.  If your child’s birthday falls on a weekend (or over break), we can pick a day close to the date.   We love having guests come share the gift of reading with our Kindergarten class!  🙂  If you can’t make it in to read, feel free to send in their favorite book and I’ll read it to the class.

This week’s story was an informational text. Our book was organized in alphabetical order and gave us information about animal babies for every letter of the alphabet (Well, with the exception of “U’ and “X;” porcUpine & foX.). The skills we worked on this week were classifying and categorizing.   We talked about how some animals are similar and how some are different. Here are some of the different ways we grouped the animals: Animals with fur and animals without fur; animals born in water and animals born on land; animals that lay eggs and animals that do not lay eggs to name a few.   We worked on the sound for the letter “F” this week. The children did a great job once again coming up with a list of words for our predictable chart (F is for…). Many of the children even tried to “sound spell” some words on the back of their morning work paper for “F.” 🙂 I was quite impressed! We will be doing more “sound spelling” when we return from Christmas break. Our popcorn word for this story was “play.”  We have completed our 1st list of popcorn words.  The children should be working on their new list a few times a week.   We completed our Unit 5 activity book today. Please take some time to have your child show you their work and tell you some of the things they’ve been learning.

Our annual Christmas program for grades K-5 is quickly approaching! The children have been working very hard with Mrs. Langferman and are looking forward to performing for all of you.   The program will be on Thursday, December 15th at 7:00 p.m.  The children will need to be in our classroom at 6:45 p.m. (No earlier please, I will be getting my family ready too. 🙂  Thanks for your understanding!).   You will have a chance to find a seat in the PLC if you arrive a little early and to make sure the children have a chance to go to the bathroom before we get ready  for the program. The band and choir will do a short performance before grades K-5 perform.  The children may dress casual (anything appropriate for church), but may NOT wear jeans. Your child may wear his/her “Sunday BEST”, but this is not mandatory. If the girls plan on wearing a dress, please remind them how to sit properly. They will be sitting on the bleachers in the front row.  The children have been working hard and are looking forward to performing for you and your families. Don’t forget your cameras!  🙂 Their sweet, innocent voices really remind us of the true meaning of Christmas!

recess and lunch.  Mrs. Hudson has a Lion Cub and a 5th grader here at St. Rose.  The Kindergarten class will PREVIEW the Scholastic Book Fair on Tuesday afternoon.  They will bring home a WISH LIST for our purchase day on Wednesday.  PRIDE meeting at 6:30 p.m.

*12/7   Kindergarten students will be able to purchase books at the Book Fair.  If you would like for your child to buy books, please be sure to send money in an envelope with their name on it, how much money is included and how much they can spend (if you are expecting change, please let us know or your precious one might spend it all.  🙂  ).

*12/9  Youth Group Parents Night Out (see flyer that came home this week).

*There will NOT be a December snack calendar since we are not here the whole month and our extra pile still has snacks in it.  Our next snack calendar will be for January.

*Many of the children complained of being cold this week during recess.  Please be sure the children have warm coats, hats and gloves with them every day.  We will go outside all winter as long as the weather permits and the temperature does not get below 25 degrees.

*I STARTED assessing November/December goal sheets this week.  If your child does not complete their goal sheet the 1st time I assess them you will receive a GOAL SHEET UPDATE form once I do to let you know what they need to continue working on.  Please be sure to practice these goals at home.  Using counters (buttons, pennies, Cheerios, etc.) when counting to 60 can be helpful!  If you need any suggestions for practicing at home, please let me know.  The next few weeks are VERY BUSY and we have a lot going on at school.  I will assess goals when time allows.  Please “bear” with me! 🙂  Don’t forget to keep working on any “old” goals (some students are still struggling with their address and phone number) your child may still need to complete.

*As winter approaches, there is always a possibility of school closings or delays.  Please note that St. Rose follows Franklin Community School for cancellations and delays. When delays or cancellations occur, they will be announced on local stations (CBS, ABC and NBC) under ‘Franklin Community Schools’. St. Rose will, also, send out an email through Jupiter. On the morning of, you may call the school office at 738-3451 to verify any delays or cancellations.

*Please be sure you are checking out the St. Rose website frequently to keep up to date on all that is going on at St. Rose School.

*Thanks for all of your help at home with your child’s monthly goals!  Your help and support truly makes a difference!  “I can, you can, we can!”

*Thanks for your help with the “holiday homework!” The ornaments on our tree look GREAT.  I was PLEASED with the words the children came up with for the beginning sounds for each letter.

*Thanks in advance to all who have signed up to help at the Book Fair!  We couldn’t do it without your support!
