Good afternoon!

Another week is in the books and we are off and running for our second!  Each week I will communicate our tentative plans, as well as event reminders and other information via this blog. Use our school website under 5th grade blog to find this information yet again.

If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email to [email protected]

Remember to check our school website weekly (maybe daily!) to stay current with all our school activities.

Have a blessed week! I look forward to being your child’s teacher!

Religion

Ask about our “Attitude is Gratitude” journals!  We are working to create grateful hearts.  As the year progresses, see if you notice a change in your child’s thankfulness. It’s a process; so please be patient with us!  🙂

Chapter 1: God’s Wonderful Creation

In the Book of Genesis, we read the account of Creation. It helps us understand that men and women are made in God’s divine image and are responsible for taking care of his created world.

Remember: Family Time can be done for extra credit. Simply send a note from home!

Math-

Chapter 1 Place Value of Whole Numbers and Decimals

Lesson 3: Place Value through Hundred Billions

Please “quiz” your child on the 4 “families” of place value (ones, thousands, millions, and billions). Each “family” has three members that go in the same pattern (ones, tens, hundreds).  This understanding is CRITICAL in helping your child have a successful year in math.

We are learning to write numbers in standard, short-word, word and expanded forms.  Have your child show you an example!

Social Studies–

Chapter 1 Our Country’s Geography

Lesson 2: Bodies of Water

Have your child tell you 4-6 NEW facts that we learned today about saltwater bodies!  (Think oceans, gulfs, sounds)

We will tackle freshwater bodies tomorrow!  We are LEARNING SO MUCH—I hope your child is as excited as I am!

Reading-

Story for the week is Davy Crockett Saves the World

Skill: Plot and Setting (story structure) Understanding how the events of a story are organized can help readers better understand and remember what they are reading.

Vocabulary: original, wring, advertisement, commenced, fireball, impress, elected, sauntered (try to use these in your “talks” this week!)

We are learning about the legend of Davy Crockett.  We are trying to “wring” out the truths from the lies.  Have your child tell you some of these!

Spelling-  long vowel sounds (ask your child what the Magic E is!)

Pre-tests are given on Mondays. Final test will be on Friday.

20 words on list plus 5 bonus words (each child has a list in their binder)

Ask what a spelling card is!

Science- Ask your child to tell you! S/he knows EXACTLY what they are learning. We made sure of it! 😉

Extras:

Band- information should be coming in an email from the band teacher, Mr. Humbert (?).  Your child tried instruments on last Friday.

Back to School Night—We hope you will join us on August 20th starting at 6pm in the Parish Life Center (PLC)!

School pictures will be on Friday, August 28. More info. to follow
