Today we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. We are joyful on this 40th day of Easter because Jesus returned to heaven to be with God. Today’s feast carries a note of sadness. After Jesus returned to his apostles after his crucifixion, what great joy was theirs. He even ate with them and allowed them to touch his wounds. Now imagine the sadness they must have felt about him leaving again! Even so, no matter what, Jesus is with us through the Holy Spirit. This was all a part of God the Father’s plan. The same Holy Spirit given to us at Baptism, and Confirmation, is very present each time we attend Eucharist. The priest first calls upon the Holy Spirit to transform the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of the Lord; after the consecration, that same Spirit is again invoked to transform us into the body of Christ.
Finally, through the beauty of the Ascension each of us should be lead to a deeper, more personal connection with Jesus through the gift of the Holy Spirit.
