I hope the children had a chance to play in the snow this weekend! There definitely was plenty of it & it was perfect for building a snowman! Hopefully that is the last snowfall we’ll have & we’ll soon see more signs of spring. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. This week we will have 2 special services as a school family. All are welcome to attend! We will have a prayer service on Holy Thursday in the church at 8:30. During this prayer service Fr. Steve will wash the feet of 9 students (K-8; Haven will be the 1st grade student.) and 3 staff members. On Good Friday, our 8th grade class will present “Mary’s Way of the Cross” at 12:15 in the church. We hope you’ll join us if you can. The 8th graders always do such a beautiful job and it’s always very moving. I’d like to wish you and your family a blessed Easter! Thanks for the snacks, Kleenex & Clorox wipes that were sent in last week. We appreciate your help! Have a wonderful week! Below is a preview of some of the things we’ll be doing this week :
This week we will be working on syllable division, trigraph tch & spelling with final ch & tch, trigraph dge & spelling with dge & ge and spelling with /ch/ & /j/. The following sight words will be introduced with this week’s Saxon lessons: enough, rough, tough, every, very. It’s important that the children are reviewing their sight words at home each week (these words can be found each week in my newsletter; all of this year’s newsletters can be found at www.stroselions.net under the first grade blog link). Thanks for working on these words! It truly makes a difference!
The Spelling words for this week are: pages, hold, kind, draw, about, over, yellow, foundation, mention, fantastic, today* & once*. The words followed by an asterisk are sight words and need to be memorized, not “sounded out.” The children will also be given a sentence to write: Can we swim in the lake at the park? The pre-test will be on Wednesday and the final test on Friday. If the children spell all of the words (including writing the sentence) correct on Wednesday, they will not have to take the test on Friday. Due to a 4-day week next week, we will NOT have a Spelling test next week.
This week we will be reading “Little Bear Goes To The Moon” (Main Selection). The children will bring their books home on Monday evening for homework. Please read pgs. 198 & 199 before reading the story & discuss the vocabulary words to make sure the children have a clear understanding of these words. They will bring home a leveled reader on Wednesday to read for homework. PLEASE be sure the children return their books the NEXT day so they have them for reading here at school. It’s a good idea to ask the “Think and Compare” questions at the end of each selection. The children are really doing a good job reading their stories each week! We couldn’t do it without your help and support! THANK YOU!
This week we will be working on telling time to the hour & 1/2 hour.
This week we will read short bible stories and open our Resurrection Eggs to learn more about Jesus’ death & Resurrection. We will do different activities to gain a better understanding of Holy Week. The children have enjoyed reading the Stations of the Cross with the 3rd grade class every Friday during Lent. They are looking forward to seeing the “washing of feet” at our Holy Thursday prayer service as well as seeing our 8th grade class present Mary’s Way of the Cross.
